Gesture becomes habit, habit forms attitude, attitude creates ritual, ritual defines identity,
and identity becomes gesture.
I remember certain scenes of growing up in a Korean traditional house: Hearing the footsteps
followed by the paper screen door sliding to reveal the space beyond, catching shadows moving on the
screen door, and smelling the scent of paper floor permeating the room. These subtle gestures of daily
ritual have nurtured my imagination and curiosity.
Creativity is a process of discovery, discovering the traces of my memory. Memory is not what I
remember seeing but how my body remembers moving through spaces. The motion of walking, turning,
and looking through the layers of the steel fences and steel bands creates a constant shift in
perspectives and perpetual desire to follow the path. The experience of passing through keeps my
curiosity in chasing after the end of the rainbow.
As a child, I would spend countless hours looking up in the sky and wondering about the world that
exists beyond the clouds. Now days, I find myself writing passages of thoughts at airports. Like the blue
sky, clarity of thought comes over me and I am compelled to record this unaccountable time in transit.
It is not the final destination but the process of getting there.
몸짓은 습관이 되고, 습관은 태도를 형성하고, 태도는 의식(儀式)을 만들고, 의식은 정체성을 말하고,
정체성은 몸짓이 된다.
전통 한옥에서 자랐던 시간을 기억한다. 미닫이 문이 열리고 새로운 공간이 드러나며 들려오는
발소리, 창호지에 어른거리는 그림자, 방 안을 가득 채우는 장판지의 향기. 일상의 작은 의식(儀式)들의
몸짓은 나의 상상력과 호기심의 원천이 되었다.
창조란 기억 속의 흔적들을 재발견하는 과정이다. 그것은 눈이 본 것에 대한 기억이 아니라 공간
속을 움직여 온 내 몸이 기억하는 것이다. 강철 망과 띠가 만들어 내는 다층적 구조 속을 걸어가며 사이
사이의 공간을 통해 바라본다. 시시각각 변하는 관점에 따라 펼쳐지는 그 길을 영원히 따라가고 싶어진다.
움직임 속에서 나의 호기심은 무지개의 끝을 좇는다.
어린 시절 파란 하늘을 바라보며 구름 저편의 세상을 그려보던 수많은 시간들.
종종 공항의 라운지에서 생각의 여정을 적곤 한다. 푸른 하늘처럼 다가오는 마음의 명료함 속에서 설명
할 수 없는 이동의 시간들을 기록한다. 목적지가 아니라, 그곳에 이르는 과정에 대한 것이다.
익숙한 자신의 도시에서 어떻게 길을 잃을 수 있을까? 오직 익숙한 환경 속에서만 아무런 목적 없이
자유롭게 거닐수 있다. 뉴욕에서 보낸 시절 동안 맨해튼의 거리들을 여유롭게 걸어 다니곤 했다. 예기치
않은 순간, 쇼윈도에 비친 나의 모습을 발견하게 된다. 몸과 마음의 만남이 의식으로 드러나는 찰나이다.
몸이 길을 따라 가며, 마음은 또다른 시간의 여정을 떠난다. 자신을 찾기 위해 스스로 길을 잃는 과정이다.
답을 찾는 과정 속에서 새로운 물음들을 얻곤 한다.
